On The Coast of Iceland: Reykjavik

A curious fact about its name is that it's just a marketing term to draw attention.

Iceland is an island that’s part of Europe and is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It’s one of the most sparsely populated countries that is also part of Scandinavia (along with Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden). Its language is Icelandic, which belongs to the Germanic language family next to Dutch, German and the rest of the Nordic languages (with the exception of Finnish). Iceland holds the title for having the cleanest capital in the world, Reykjavik.

Its capital is a very popular destination for tourists, and it’s located in the southwestern part of Iceland. The history of this capital goes back to the late 9th century, where the first permanent settlement was established by Norsemen, and its name comes from the steam of hot springs in the region (Reykjavik’s translation is Smoke Cove).

Reykjavik has a wide of places to visit, and most of them are outdoor experiences, like the Golden Circle. This touristic route is famous for having many stops that go from the Thingvellir National Park to the Haukadalur, which contains the famous geysers Strollur and Geysir. Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes while Geysir remains in a dormant state. A curious fact about the Golden Circle is that the origin of its name was just a marketing term that has no relation to Iceland’s history.

If you’re not much into long trips on foot, you can check the city and get to know how energetic and lively the natives are. There’s a very interesting place in the center of Reykjavik, a featured landmark that can be spotted easily: The Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran church famous for its elegance and size (it’s the tallest structure of Iceland), it’s also used as an observation tower. This church houses a huge pipe organ that was made by Johannes Klais, a German organ builder.

Iceland is a place for those who want to experience a change of air and feel relaxed. This destination is famous because of the options it offers to tourists looking for calm adventure outdoors. Try this destination and contact with Cruise Planners – Jason Hantman, check their cruising options and offers! Choose them for an unforgettable trip.
This is a lutheran church that took 41 years to be built. It's so tall that it is also used as an observation tower.

Emerged in the 10th century after struggling for control of the Baltic Sea. Denmark’s history has been influenced mostly because of its geographical location between the North and Baltic seas. This Scandinavian country comprises two autonomous constituent countries of the North Atlantic Ocean.

It’s most populous city and capital is Copenhagen, which was originally a Viking fishing village in the 10th century. Now, the city has become a strong urban and cultural place for tourism, and it’s currently the center of the culture, economy and governmental departments.

One of the most important features of this park is that it’s always evolving without forgetting its traditions and charms.

Nyhavn (Danish for New Harbour), is a waterfront and entertainment district. This place has buildings that give a feeling of going back to the old style back in the 17th century, with old wooden ships on the harbor. The south side of the canal of Nyhavn has been reserved for museum ships from the Danish National Museum. The Memorial Anchor is a commemoration monument to remind the 1700 Danish officers and sailors that served in the Navy, Allied Forces and Merchant Fleet, who sacrificed their lives during World War II.

The variety of languages the European Union have are the primary reason for their difference and diversity of cultures and historic facts, even though they’re located in Europe. Due to the policies between the members of this union, the commerce in each country is high and most of the countries are very stable in their economy.

Portugal is one of the countries that, even with the financial troubles that happened in the past (the financial crisis of 2007-08, for example), it has been able to remain stable in their financial system. Their central bank is the Banco de Portugal, it’s an important part of the European System of Central Banks. Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, is the most populated city, together with Porto. Casa Da Música, for example, is one of the main attractions for people interested in this expression of art. The design of this building was acclaimed worldwide by several architecture critics. It’s one the city’s main icons and cultural places to look if you’re visiting.

For readers and book lovers, the Livraria Lello is a must. Known as one of the oldest bookstores in the world, this neo-gothic building is the definite place for those looking for a unique experience while browsing books of interest. The Palácio da Bolsa and the Church of Sao Francisco are great alternatives for tourism as well.

There’s nothing to worry about if you don’t know the official language, just make sure you’re with a group of people so you don’t feel lost. Touristic guides could be useful for these cases. If you haven’t made up your mind yet, you should be checking the options Cruise Planners – Jason Hantman has to offer. Get in contact to get the full information about destinations and dates.

Dublin: Ireland’s Tourism through the Capital

Until the 19th century, it was the seat of the UK Goverment's administration in Ireland. Now it serves as a major attraction for tourists.

Ireland, the third-largest island in Europe and located in the North Atlantic, is one of the most populous islands as well (second-most, after Great Britain). The name Ireland comes from the Old Irish word
Eriu. This, in turn, derives from Proto-Celtic Iveriu, which is also the source of Latin Hibernia. Iveriu comes from the root that means “prosperous, swell”.

The culture of Ireland is vast and has spread abroad other countries. If that’s not enough, Ireland’s capital and largest city, Dublin, is considered a global city. With a ranking of “Alpha-“, Dublin is placed amongst the top thirty cities in the world. This city was the father of writers such as Oscar Wilde and James Joyce. Rich in history, as Vikings founded it as their first settlement. It might sound like and old town, but it’s rather young and lively, filled with people from all walks of life.

Situated in the historic Dublin, the Dublin Castle is one of the examples of how strong the roots of the past are. This castle started off being just fortifications for the Vikings in 930 and after the Normans invaded Dublin they used the castle as a stronghold. The castle itself was born in 1230. It was a symbol of English reign, and it became a target during the Risings of 1916, in the first attempt to end the British rule in Ireland. This is a strong historical place for tourists to relive the past and history of Ireland.

Another place of interest in Dublin is the Convention Centre Dublin, a known project designed by Kevin Roche, an American-Irish architect. This structure was shortlisted for the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards – Engineering Project of the Year 2010 and won the award for Best Overseas Conference Centre.

There are much more places to look, and if you’re willing to look for more why not go there and experience the trip yourself? Cruising has become the best way to get to know different places, so try with Cruise Planners – Jason Hantman, for a cruise experience worth the while. Contact for more information.
Designed by the American-Irish architect Kevin Roche, this convention centre is known for being the first carbon neutral constructed convention centre in the world.
