On The Coast of Iceland: Reykjavik

A curious fact about its name is that it's just a marketing term to draw attention.

Iceland is an island that’s part of Europe and is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It’s one of the most sparsely populated countries that is also part of Scandinavia (along with Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden). Its language is Icelandic, which belongs to the Germanic language family next to Dutch, German and the rest of the Nordic languages (with the exception of Finnish). Iceland holds the title for having the cleanest capital in the world, Reykjavik.

Its capital is a very popular destination for tourists, and it’s located in the southwestern part of Iceland. The history of this capital goes back to the late 9th century, where the first permanent settlement was established by Norsemen, and its name comes from the steam of hot springs in the region (Reykjavik’s translation is Smoke Cove).

Reykjavik has a wide of places to visit, and most of them are outdoor experiences, like the Golden Circle. This touristic route is famous for having many stops that go from the Thingvellir National Park to the Haukadalur, which contains the famous geysers Strollur and Geysir. Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes while Geysir remains in a dormant state. A curious fact about the Golden Circle is that the origin of its name was just a marketing term that has no relation to Iceland’s history.

If you’re not much into long trips on foot, you can check the city and get to know how energetic and lively the natives are. There’s a very interesting place in the center of Reykjavik, a featured landmark that can be spotted easily: The Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran church famous for its elegance and size (it’s the tallest structure of Iceland), it’s also used as an observation tower. This church houses a huge pipe organ that was made by Johannes Klais, a German organ builder.

Iceland is a place for those who want to experience a change of air and feel relaxed. This destination is famous because of the options it offers to tourists looking for calm adventure outdoors. This is a lutheran church that took 41 years to be built. It's so tall that it is also used as an observation tower.
