5 Reasons to Keep a Travel Journal

Write down every detail of your journey, it will become a nice moment of your trip.

When you set your mind into a destination, you do it for reasons that go beyond the place itself. People often claim that it’s all about doing everything the internet tells you to do: staying in 5-star hotels, visiting the most-demanded places, guided activities and so on. These are luxuries that improve the trip, that’s true. But it turns out these mean nothing if you don’t put feelings into the experience.

One secret for getting it done is by putting all you’ve been through in a travel journal. You might be wondering why a travel journal, but by keeping a record of what you experience, your trips will be more valuable and personal. Here are 5 reasons why you should keep one for yourself:

1.- It makes it personal

As you write what you are going through, you’ll feel the experience is more tangible and real. People tend to forget certain details that happen while traveling. With a travel journal on hand, not a single thought will escape from being written. Put every emotion that invaded you while you travel; it will stay as a record of how you felt at that moment.

2.- You can keep a set of tips from locals

Locals are the best source of secret advice and insights that no website will ever offer. Write down every single tip and secret behind your destination, and don’t think of leaving without visiting or getting it done! Having these secrets will not be just useful at the moment, you could put them on your blog, and people will be thankful for that piece of information.

3.- An opportunity to hear and record stories from others

You were walking at the park, and a guy engaged you in a conversation. Suddenly, he starts telling you a story about his own life experiences, and you decide to listen to him. Before that person continues, ask if you can record the story for your journal. Of course, it doesn’t happen necessarily the way I exposed it, but if someone is willing to tell you a story, don’t take the opportunity for granted. Other people’s stories are something any traveler should treasure.

4.- Travel journals and self-discovery

Leaving your comfort zone might not be as noticeable destinations like the major cities, but natural environments and destinations that favor solitude often put the traveler into a state of discernment. Travel unravels reality from a different perspective, showing us who we are and putting us in a journey of self-discovery. Write down all these thoughts and keep them in mind upon return.

5.- Future information you can access to

All things you did while traveling can be stored in your journal as research material. You can add details you would like to remember about the trip, and they’ll be saved for future readings or to support others who might need assistance. If you want to take it to another level, sort every chunk of information by adding a table of contents at the beginning, it will sort your mind and help the future you access to those details.

This is not a just-for-writers thing to do. You don’t need to be an expert in writing to summarize your trip in a piece of paper correctly. Instead, you need to be passionate about the journey, the things you did and how you felt doing them. Trips are all fueled by emotion.
